The Japanese art of origami has been used to fascinate friends and family for countless generations. If you can fold a piece of paper into any of the classic origami shapes or patterns, you will instantly impress your peers — and enthrall your enemies.
What's equally impressive (but requires much more skill) is the art of robotics. People who build robots are often regarded as technological geniuses. After all, it takes similar precision and craftsmanship to put together a working bot that moves on command. Yet unlike origami's simple sheet of paper, there are tons of moving parts that go along with the construction of a robot.
But what if you were able to combine the two art forms?
Students at MIT developed an autonomous robot that folds itself up like origami. It combines the awesome power of technology with the delicate Japanese paper art.
I'd say that this creation is more impressive than both folding origami and building a robot. The uses for this robot are still being researched in the medical field, as it could save many lives once the technology is figured out. Perhaps it could even zap cancer cells or unclog arteries. The future is bright in the world of robotics!
